Saudi Arabia (X tons) was the main destination for sour cherry exports from Bahrain, accounting for a 99% share of total exports. It was followed by Oman (X kg), with a 0.5% share of total exports.

Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sour cherry imports fell sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 229% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Syrian Arab Republic (X tons) constituted the largest sour cherry supplier to Bahrain, accounting for a 70% share of total imports. Moreover, sour cherry imports from Syrian Arab Republic exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Spain (X tons), tenfold. Afghanistan (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 6.9% share.

From 2013 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Syrian Arab Republic totaled +38.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (+108.5% per year) and Afghanistan (+49.0% per year).

In value terms, Syrian Arab Republic ($X), Turkey ($X) and Argentina ($X) constituted the largest sour cherry suppliers to Bahrain, with a combined 61% share of total imports. Spain, Afghanistan and Jordan lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 14%.

Among the main suppliers, Spain, with a CAGR of +73.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average sour cherry import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the average import price increased by 18%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Argentina ($X per ton), while the price for Jordan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Iran (+9.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
