The Bahraini pasta and couscous market contracted to $X in 2022, dropping by -4.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 325% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, pasta and couscous exports fell to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 185% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Sudan (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) were the main destinations of pasta and couscous exports from Bahrain, together accounting for 57% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for South Africa (with a CAGR of +69.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X), Oman ($X) and Sudan ($X) were the largest markets for pasta and couscous exported from Bahrain worldwide, with a combined 50% share of total exports. Jordan, Niger, South Africa and Kuwait lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 18%.

As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Oman ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Sudan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Malta (+13.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Bahrain

In 2022, approx. X tons of stuffed pasta and couscous were imported into Bahrain; reducing by -7% against the year before. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, pasta and couscous imports rose remarkably to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 19%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

The average pasta and couscous import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 15% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.2%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average import price increased by 36%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per ton), while the price for Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
