Cabbage Market Size in Bangladesh

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was decline in the Bangladeshi cabbage market, when its value decreased by -1.7% to $X. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 3,389% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, cabbage exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 5,194% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Singapore (X tons) was the main destination for cabbage exports from Bangladesh, accounting for a 2.8% share of total exports. Moreover, cabbage exports to Singapore exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Brunei Darussalam (X tons), eightfold.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the average export price increased by 248%. There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Singapore ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Saudi Arabia (+60.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Bangladesh

After five years of decline, supplies from abroad of cabbage and other brassicas increased by 196% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 478% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cabbage imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a noticeable curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 707%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, India (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of cabbage to Bangladesh, accounting for a 57% share of total imports. Moreover, cabbage imports from India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the UK (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Egypt (X kg), with a 9.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from India stood at -7.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the UK (0.0% per year) and Egypt (+155.8% per year).

In value terms, India ($X), the UK ($X) and Egypt ($X) constituted the largest cabbage suppliers to Bangladesh, together accounting for 82% of total imports.

In terms of the main suppliers, Egypt, with a CAGR of +192.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average cabbage import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed temperate growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 107%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while the price for India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+47.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
