The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 218%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, chewing gum exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 281%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) was the main destination for chewing gum exports from Bangladesh, accounting for a 33% share of total exports. Moreover, chewing gum exports to Democratic Republic of the Congo exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Angola (X tons), twofold. India (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Democratic Republic of the Congo stood at +24.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Angola (+23.2% per year) and India (+46.3% per year).

In value terms, India ($X), Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) and Nepal ($X) were the largest markets for chewing gum exported from Bangladesh worldwide, with a combined 57% share of total exports. Saudi Arabia, Angola, Samoa, Sweden, Ethiopia, Bolivia, Australia, Ghana and Gambia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 31%.

Among the main countries of destination, Sweden, with a CAGR of +58.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average chewing gum export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 47% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, chewing gum export price increased by +111.9% against 2019 indices. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in supplies from abroad of chewing gum, when their volume increased by 42% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports showed a tangible increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 71% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, chewing gum imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports recorded tangible growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 68%. Imports peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

India (X tons), China (X tons) and Pakistan (X tons) were the main suppliers of chewing gum imports to Bangladesh, together accounting for 45% of total imports. These countries were followed by Indonesia, Malaysia, the United States and South Korea, which together accounted for a further 22%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Malaysia (with a CAGR of +52.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Pakistan ($X), India ($X) and Malaysia ($X) appeared to be the largest chewing gum suppliers to Bangladesh, with a combined 37% share of total imports.
