Cotton Lint Market Size in Bangladesh

The Bangladeshi cotton lint market fell to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -12.7% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, enjoyed a buoyant expansion. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

Cotton Lint Production in Bangladesh

In value terms, cotton lint production stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 65%. Cotton lint production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

The average yield of cotton lint in Bangladesh skyrocketed to X tons per ha in 2022, increasing by 22% compared with 2021. Overall, the yield, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the yield increased by 47% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. In 2022, overseas shipments of cotton lint increased by 0.9% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after three years of decline. Over the period under review, exports saw a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 75% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In value terms, cotton lint exports fell markedly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a slight shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 163% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank sharply in the following year.

India (X tons) was the main destination for cotton lint exports from Bangladesh, with a approx. 19% share of total exports.

In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 103%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, cotton lint imports fell notably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 115%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then contracted markedly in the following year.

India (X tons), Brazil (X tons) and Benin (X tons) were the main suppliers of cotton lint imports to Bangladesh, with a combined 71% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Brazil (with a CAGR of +39.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, India ($X), Brazil ($X) and the United States ($X) were the largest cotton lint suppliers to Bangladesh, together comprising 69% of total imports.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($X per ton), while the price for Benin ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
