The Bangladeshi fish meals and pellet market shrank rapidly to $X in 2021, reducing by -21.2% against the previous year. Malaysia (X kg) was the main destination for fish meals and pellet exports from Bangladesh, accounting for a 60% share of total exports. Moreover, fish meals and pellet exports to Malaysia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, China (X kg), twofold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Malaysia was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: China (-30.8% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (-51.7% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) remains the key foreign market for flours, meals and pellets of fish exports from Bangladesh, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Malaysia ($X), with a 14% share of total exports.

The average fish meals and pellet export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, almost unchanged from the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average export price increased by 36%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (+11.2%).

Imports into Bangladesh

In 2021, the amount of flours, meals and pellets of fish imported into Bangladesh dropped notably to X tons, declining by -23% against the year before. In general, imports, however, saw a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 1,066% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
