Maize Market Size in Bangladesh

The United Arab Emirates (X tons), the UK (X tons) and Kuwait (X tons) were the main destinations of maize exports from Bangladesh, with a combined 68% share of total exports.

In value terms, the UK ($X) remains the key foreign market for maize (green) exports from Bangladesh, comprising 36% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Kuwait, with a 17% share.

After three years of growth, supplies from abroad of maize (green) decreased by -22% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 293%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, maize imports dropped remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 382% against the previous year. In 2022, Thailand (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of maize to Bangladesh, with a 71% share of total imports. Moreover, maize imports from Thailand exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X tons), threefold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Thailand totaled +81.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+57.1% per year) and China (+72.4% per year).

In value terms, Thailand ($X) constituted the largest supplier of maize (green) to Bangladesh, comprising 81% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($X), with an 8.8% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Thailand totaled +70.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+65.4% per year) and India (+51.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average maize import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -12.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 53% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
