Mercury Market Size in Bangladesh

The Bangladeshi mercury market fell to $X in 2021, dropping by -2.1% against the previous year. In 2021, purchases abroad of mercuries increased by 17% to X kg, rising for the third year in a row after three years of decline. In general, imports, however, saw a dramatic contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 448% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, mercury imports contracted to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a precipitous decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 544%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, the UK (X kg) was the main mercury supplier to Bangladesh, with a 94% share of total imports. Moreover, mercury imports from the UK exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Japan (X kg), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from the UK totaled +15.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Japan (-46.2% per year) and India (0.0% per year).

In value terms, the UK ($X) constituted the largest supplier of mercuries to Bangladesh, comprising 98% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Japan ($X), with a 1.1% share of total imports.

In 2021, the average mercury import price amounted to $X per ton, waning by -24.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, enjoyed a noticeable expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average import price increased by 85% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while the price for Japan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+1.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
