Over the period under review, exports showed a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 58% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, natural rubber and gum exports shrank to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a precipitous decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 27%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Malaysia (X tons) was the main destination for natural rubber and gum exports from Bangladesh, accounting for a 80% share of total exports. Moreover, natural rubber and gum exports to Malaysia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, China (X tons), fivefold. South Korea (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 1.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Malaysia amounted to -8.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: China (-24.9% per year) and South Korea (-28.4% per year).
In value terms, China ($X), Malaysia ($X) and South Korea ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for natural rubber and gum exported from Bangladesh worldwide, together accounting for 98% of total exports.
Malaysia, with a CAGR of -15.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average natural rubber and gum export price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 9.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 46%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Korea (+16.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Natural Rubber And Gums
Imports into Bangladesh
In 2022, approx. X tons of natural rubber and gums were imported into Bangladesh; falling by -30.3% compared with 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a slight descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 155%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, natural rubber and gum imports shrank rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 146% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Thailand (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of natural rubber and gum to Bangladesh, with a 71% share of total imports. Moreover, natural rubber and gum imports from Thailand exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Sri Lanka (X tons), eightfold. South Korea (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 7.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Thailand totaled +1.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Sri Lanka (+1.9% per year) and South Korea (-1.4% per year).
In value terms, Thailand ($X) constituted the largest supplier of natural rubber and gums to Bangladesh, comprising 37% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Korea ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Sri Lanka, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Thailand stood at -8.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Korea (-2.3% per year) and Sri Lanka (-7.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average natural rubber and gum import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 4.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 16%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
