In 2022, exports of packaging materials from Bangladesh reduced markedly to X tons, shrinking by -59.2% on the year before. Overall, exports recorded a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 213% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, packaging materials exports reduced sharply to $X in 2022. In general, exports saw a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 137%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
India (X tons) was the main destination for packaging materials exports from Bangladesh, accounting for a 43% share of total exports. Moreover, packaging materials exports to India exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Sri Lanka (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by China (X tons), with a 14% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to India totaled +7.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Sri Lanka (+9.5% per year) and China (+82.9% per year).
In value terms, India ($X) remains the key foreign market for packaging materials exports from Bangladesh, comprising 48% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Sri Lanka ($X), with a 22% share of total exports. It was followed by New Zealand, with an 8.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to India stood at +11.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Sri Lanka (+19.7% per year) and New Zealand (+76.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average packaging materials export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 46% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average export price increased by 104%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Sweden ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Sri Lanka (+9.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Bangladesh
In 2022, supplies from abroad of packaging materials decreased by -6.4% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year rising trend. Over the period under review, total imports indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +10.1% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 41%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
In value terms, packaging materials imports contracted notably to $X in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +24.6% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 49%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then dropped significantly in the following year.
Imports by Country
India (X tons), China (X tons) and Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) were the main suppliers of packaging materials imports to Bangladesh, with a combined 46% share of total imports. South Korea, Hong Kong SAR, Australia, Thailand, Japan, Poland, the United States, Finland, Malaysia and Sweden lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 38%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Hong Kong SAR (with a CAGR of +28.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest packaging materials suppliers to Bangladesh were China ($X), India ($X) and South Korea ($X), together accounting for 52% of total imports. Taiwan (Chinese), Hong Kong SAR, Thailand, Australia, Poland, Finland, the United States, Japan, Sweden and Malaysia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 34%.
Hong Kong SAR, with a CAGR of +24.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average packaging materials import price amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -10.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 33%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then fell in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+0.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
