After two years of decline, the Bangladeshi unmanufactured tobacco market increased by 20% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a pronounced setback. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

Unmanufactured Tobacco Production in Bangladesh

In value terms, unmanufactured tobacco production declined to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, the total production indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +16.8% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 44% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, the average yield of tobacco (unmanufactured) in Bangladesh fell slightly to X tons per ha, waning by -2% against 2021. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the yield increased by 7.9%. The unmanufactured tobacco yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2021, and then reduced in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the unmanufactured tobacco harvested area in Bangladesh stood at X ha, approximately reflecting the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, recorded a noticeable reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 40%. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of X ha. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the unmanufactured tobacco harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Bangladesh

Unmanufactured tobacco exports from Bangladesh fell remarkably to X tons in 2022, which is down by -21.1% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 72%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then declined dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, unmanufactured tobacco exports shrank notably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 83%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then declined significantly in the following year.

Exports by Country

The Philippines (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) were the main destinations of unmanufactured tobacco exports from Bangladesh, with a combined 21% share of total exports. The Netherlands, Belgium, Poland, the United Arab Emirates, the United States, the Dominican Republic, Greece, Algeria, Italy and South Korea lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 35%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by the Dominican Republic (with a CAGR of +64.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), Germany ($X) and Poland ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for unmanufactured tobacco exported from Bangladesh worldwide, with a combined 18% share of total exports. The Philippines, Belgium, Turkey, the Dominican Republic, the United Arab Emirates, the United States, Greece, Italy, South Korea and Algeria lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 31%.

The Dominican Republic, with a CAGR of +53.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average unmanufactured tobacco export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 5.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average export price increased by 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Algeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Philippines (+4.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Unmanufactured Tobacco Imports

Imports into Bangladesh

In 2022, approx. X tons of tobacco (unmanufactured) were imported into Bangladesh; with a decrease of -7.3% against 2021. Overall, imports recorded a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 55% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, unmanufactured tobacco imports shrank significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 59%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Brazil (X tons) constituted the largest unmanufactured tobacco supplier to Bangladesh, with a 59% share of total imports. Moreover, unmanufactured tobacco imports from Brazil exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was held by the Philippines (X tons), with an 8.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Brazil amounted to -7.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (-3.5% per year) and the Philippines (+9.1% per year).

In value terms, Brazil ($X) constituted the largest supplier of tobacco (unmanufactured) to Bangladesh, comprising 67% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Philippines ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by India, with a 4.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Brazil totaled -7.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Philippines (+5.2% per year) and India (-2.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average unmanufactured tobacco import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -12.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average import price increased by 24% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Philippines ($X per ton), while the price for India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
