In 2021, the number of animals slaughtered for chicken meat production in Belarus contracted to X heads, which is down by -5.6% against the year before. This number increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the number of producing animals increased by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, this number reached the maximum level at X heads in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, producing animals stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Belarus
In 2021, shipments abroad of chicken meat decreased by -2.4% to X tons for the first time since 2011, thus ending a nine-year rising trend. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +80.1% against 2012 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2020, and then shrank slightly in the following year.
In value terms, chicken meat exports expanded markedly to $X in 2021. In general, total exports indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +65.6% against 2015 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
Russia (X tons) was the main destination for chicken meat exports from Belarus, with a 64% share of total exports. Moreover, chicken meat exports to Russia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, China (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Kazakhstan (X tons), with a 6.1% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Russia amounted to +1.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: China (+185.0% per year) and Kazakhstan (+24.6% per year).
In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the key foreign market for chicken meat exports from Belarus, comprising 63% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($X), with a 23% share of total exports. It was followed by Kazakhstan, with a 4.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Russia amounted to -1.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: China (+181.7% per year) and Kazakhstan (+18.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average chicken meat export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a pronounced shrinkage. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Ukraine (-0.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Chicken Meat Imports
Imports into Belarus
For the third consecutive year, Belarus recorded growth in supplies from abroad of chicken meat, which increased by 32% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports recorded a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 181% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, chicken meat imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 333%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Ukraine (X tons), Russia (X tons) and Finland (X tons) were the main suppliers of chicken meat imports to Belarus, together accounting for 76% of total imports. These countries were followed by Turkey, Latvia, Poland, Azerbaijan, France, Hungary and Lithuania, which together accounted for a further 20%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Turkey (with a CAGR of +90.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest chicken meat suppliers to Belarus were Ukraine ($X), Russia ($X) and Turkey ($X), with a combined 82% share of total imports.
Turkey, with a CAGR of +96.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average chicken meat import price amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -4.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded noticeable growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 58% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped modestly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while the price for Lithuania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+3.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
