Chocolate Market Size in Belarus

In 2022, the Belarusian chocolate market decreased by -14.8% to $X, falling for the third consecutive year after four years of growth. In general, the total consumption indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last decade. In general, the total production indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -1.3% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the production volume increased by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports from Belarus

In 2022, shipments abroad of chocolate and cocoa products increased by 26% to X tons, rising for the fourth year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 39%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, chocolate exports rose remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 48% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Russia (X tons) was the main destination for chocolate exports from Belarus, with a 76% share of total exports. Moreover, chocolate exports to Russia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Ukraine (X tons), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by China (X tons), with a 3.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Russia stood at -3.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Ukraine (+24.2% per year) and China (+144.5% per year).

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the key foreign market for chocolate and cocoa products exports from Belarus, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ukraine ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by China, with a 5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Russia totaled +8.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Ukraine (+33.6% per year) and China (+147.5% per year).

In 2022, the average chocolate export price amounted to $X per ton, falling by -12.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the average export price increased by 334% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Azerbaijan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Ukraine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Azerbaijan (+14.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Belarus

In 2022, imports of chocolate and cocoa products into Belarus dropped sharply to X tons, with a decrease of -27.7% compared with 2021. Overall, total imports indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then declined notably in the following year.

In value terms, chocolate imports declined notably to $X in 2022. In general, imports recorded a slight decrease. In 2022, Russia (X tons) constituted the largest chocolate supplier to Belarus, accounting for a 74% share of total imports. Moreover, chocolate imports from Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Ukraine (X tons), eightfold. Germany (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Russia amounted to +7.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Ukraine (-13.6% per year) and Germany (+3.5% per year).

The average chocolate import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -2.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a noticeable decline.
