Ethanol Market Size in Belarus

The Belarusian ethanol market rose significantly to $X in 2022, picking up by 6.1% against the previous year. Overall, the total consumption indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -4.9% against 2020 indices. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, ethanol production amounted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, the total production indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -6.0% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 31%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Belarus

In 2022, ethanol exports from Belarus rose notably to X litres, increasing by 10% against the year before. Overall, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 75%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X litres. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, ethanol exports rose significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 96%. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Georgia (X litres), Turkmenistan (X litres) and Azerbaijan (X litres) were the main destinations of ethanol exports from Belarus, with a combined 73% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Russia, Estonia, Moldova and Armenia, which together accounted for a further 26%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Russia (with a CAGR of +65.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Georgia ($X), Turkmenistan ($X) and Azerbaijan ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for ethanol exported from Belarus worldwide, together accounting for 78% of total exports. Estonia, Moldova, Russia and Armenia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 21%.

Russia, with a CAGR of +58.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average ethanol export price amounted to $X per litre, with an increase of 1.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a noticeable contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 12%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per litre in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Turkmenistan ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to Russia ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Estonia (+9.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Belarus

In 2022, supplies from abroad of ethyl alcohol was finally on the rise to reach X litres for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 1,642%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X litres. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, ethanol imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 1,081%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Russia (X litres) was the main supplier of ethanol to Belarus, accounting for a 95% share of total imports. Moreover, ethanol imports from Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X litres), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Russia stood at -13.1%.

In value terms, the largest ethanol suppliers to Belarus were Germany ($X) and Russia ($X).

Germany, with a CAGR of -13.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average ethanol import price amounted to $X per litre, waning by -31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a slight downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average import price increased by 41%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per litre, and then declined notably in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per litre), while the price for Russia amounted to $X per litre.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+1.7%).
