Garlic Market Size in Belarus

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was decline in the Belarusian garlic market, when its value decreased by -2.5% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Garlic Production in Belarus

In value terms, garlic production contracted slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, the total production indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last decade. The average yield of garlic in Belarus expanded modestly to X tons per ha in 2022, surging by 1.9% on the previous year's figure. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the yield increased by 17%. Over the period under review, the average garlic yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of garlic production in Belarus reduced slightly to X ha, declining by -2.3% against 2021 figures. Overall, the harvested area continues to indicate a perceptible downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the harvested area increased by 18%. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of X ha. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the garlic harvested area remained at a lower figure.

After two years of growth, shipments abroad of garlic decreased by -18.5% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a perceptible contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 195%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, garlic exports shrank remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 270% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Russia (X tons) was the main destination for garlic exports from Belarus, accounting for a 85% share of total exports. Moreover, garlic exports to Russia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Lithuania (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Russia stood at -5.6%.

In value terms, Russia ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for garlic exports from Belarus, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Lithuania ($X), with a 17% share of total exports.

The average garlic export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -3.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the average export price increased by 57%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Lithuania ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Russia amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Lithuania (+33.0%).

Garlic Imports

Imports into Belarus

Garlic imports into Belarus expanded significantly to X tons in 2022, increasing by 9.3% compared with the previous year's figure. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 33% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, garlic imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 77% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2016; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Imports by Country

In 2022, China (X tons) constituted the largest garlic supplier to Belarus, accounting for a 63% share of total imports. Moreover, garlic imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Russia (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Iran (X tons), with a 7.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from China was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Russia (+10.5% per year) and Iran (+17.1% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of garlic to Belarus, comprising 52% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Russia ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Iran, with an 8.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from China amounted to +4.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Russia (+19.4% per year) and Iran (+25.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average garlic import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, garlic import price increased by +45.8% against 2018 indices. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+11.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
