In 2021, the Belarusian measuring instrument market decreased by -22.6% to $X for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year rising trend. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a moderate expansion. Measuring instrument consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, measuring instrument production contracted sharply to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, posted slight growth. Exports from Belarus

For the third consecutive year, Belarus recorded growth in overseas shipments of instruments and apparatus for measuring or checking the flow or level of liquids, which increased by 3.7% to X units in 2021. In general, total exports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +14.4% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 49% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, measuring instrument exports shrank to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +84.4% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports by Country

Russia (X units) was the main destination for measuring instrument exports from Belarus, with a 48% share of total exports. Moreover, measuring instrument exports to Russia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Ukraine (X units), threefold. Cuba (X units) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Russia amounted to +4.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Ukraine (+19.3% per year) and Cuba (+118.0% per year).

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the key foreign market for measuring instrument exports from Belarus, comprising 33% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ukraine ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by the Czech Republic, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Russia amounted to -3.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Ukraine (+24.4% per year) and the Czech Republic (+26.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average measuring instrument export price amounted to $X per unit, with a decrease of -12.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Cuba ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Ukraine (+4.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Belarus

In 2021, purchases abroad of instruments and apparatus for measuring or checking the flow or level of liquids decreased by -14.7% to X units, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 156% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, measuring instrument imports dropped to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw moderate growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 71% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, Russia (X units) constituted the largest supplier of measuring instrument to Belarus, accounting for a 71% share of total imports. Moreover, measuring instrument imports from Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (X units), more than tenfold. China (X units) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 5.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Russia stood at +11.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (-0.9% per year) and China (+4.5% per year).

In value terms, Russia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of measuring instrument to Belarus, comprising 40% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with a 1.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Russia totaled +9.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (-2.9% per year) and Italy (+0.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average measuring instrument import price stood at $X per unit in 2021, rising by 3.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a pronounced decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average import price increased by 56% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per unit), while the price for Italy ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+1.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
