In 2021, the Belarusian leather market decreased by -28.6% to $X, falling for the seventh consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, consumption saw a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, leather exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a pronounced decrease. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Italy (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Russia (X tons) were the main destinations of leather exports from Belarus, with a combined 82% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Russia (with a CAGR of +9.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Russia ($X), Poland ($X) and Italy ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for leather exported from Belarus worldwide, together comprising 72% of total exports. These countries were followed by Lithuania, Ukraine, India and Estonia, which together accounted for a further 25%.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Lithuania, with a CAGR of +6.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2021, the average leather export price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 31% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a noticeable slump. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to India (+10.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Belarus
After three years of decline, supplies from abroad of leather increased by 2.4% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a pronounced downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 29%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, leather imports rose slightly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Russia (X tons) was the main supplier of leather to Belarus, accounting for a 109% share of total imports. Moreover, leather imports from Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by India (X tons), with a 7.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Russia amounted to +2.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+6.9% per year) and India (+27.6% per year).
In value terms, Russia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of leather to Belarus, comprising 73% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Poland ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with a 9.6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Russia totaled -5.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (-9.9% per year) and Italy (-3.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average leather import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average import price increased by 7.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Ukraine ($X per ton), while the price for Slovenia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Slovenia (+2.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
