In 2021, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in the Belarusian molluscs market, when its value decreased by -8.7% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a mild curtailment. In value terms, molluscs exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, faced a abrupt descent. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Russia (X tons) was the main destination for molluscs exports from Belarus, accounting for a 83% share of total exports. Moreover, molluscs exports to Russia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Slovenia (X tons), sixfold.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Russia stood at -12.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Slovenia (-55.9% per year) and Ukraine (0.0% per year).
In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the key foreign market for molluscs (scallops, mussels, cuttle fish, squid and octopus) exports from Belarus, comprising 72% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Slovenia ($X), with a 16% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Russia amounted to -16.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Slovenia (-57.3% per year) and Ukraine (0.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average molluscs export price amounted to $X per ton, waning by -40.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a perceptible contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 42%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then contracted sharply in the following year.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Slovenia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Slovenia (-3.3%).

Imports into Belarus
In 2021, overseas purchases of molluscs (scallops, mussels, cuttle fish, squid and octopus) decreased by -9.7% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year rising trend. In general, total imports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 82%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, molluscs imports dropped modestly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 58% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Russia (X tons) constituted the largest molluscs supplier to Belarus, with a 37% share of total imports. Moreover, molluscs imports from Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Peru (X tons), twofold. Vietnam (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 15% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Russia stood at +7.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Peru (-4.2% per year) and Vietnam (+1.9% per year).
In value terms, Russia ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Peru ($X) appeared to be the largest molluscs suppliers to Belarus, together comprising 67% of total imports. Spain, Latvia, Lithuania, India, China and Chile lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 26%.
In terms of the main suppliers, Spain, with a CAGR of +35.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average molluscs import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 9.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a pronounced contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 19%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for Lithuania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Chile (+2.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
