Peat Market Size in Belarus

After four years of growth, the Belarusian peat market decreased by -17.7% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption continues to indicate a perceptible reduction. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, peat exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 40% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Finland (X tons) was the main destination for peat exports from Belarus, with a 38% share of total exports. Moreover, peat exports to Finland exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Poland (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Lithuania (X tons), with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Finland totaled +14.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Poland (+2.6% per year) and Lithuania (-8.2% per year).

In value terms, Finland ($X), Poland ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X) were the largest markets for peat exported from Belarus worldwide, together comprising 64% of total exports. Lithuania, Russia, Sweden, Ukraine, Turkey and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 27%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Ukraine, with a CAGR of +31.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average peat export price amounted to $X per ton, declining by -10.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a mild decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 17%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Sweden ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Turkey (+10.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Belarus

In 2021, purchases abroad of peat decreased by -13.4% to X tons for the first time since 2011, thus ending a nine-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 38%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, peat imports declined to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 42%. Imports peaked at $X in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.

Imports by Country

Poland (X tons), Russia (X tons) and Ukraine (X tons) were the main suppliers of peat imports to Belarus, with a combined 95% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Russia (with a CAGR of +33.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest peat suppliers to Belarus were Russia ($X), Poland ($X) and Latvia ($X), together accounting for 95% of total imports.

Russia, with a CAGR of +25.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average peat import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 4.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 16%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Latvia ($X per ton), while the price for Ukraine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Latvia (-3.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
