Plastic Container Market Size in Belarus

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 51% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, plastic container exports surged to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Russia (X tons) was the main destination for plastic container exports from Belarus, accounting for a 81% share of total exports. Moreover, plastic container exports to Russia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Latvia (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Poland (X tons), with a 3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Russia stood at +1.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Latvia (+24.1% per year) and Poland (+171.7% per year).

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the key foreign market for plastic containers exports from Belarus, comprising 82% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Poland ($X), with a 4.3% share of total exports. It was followed by Latvia, with a 3.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Russia was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Poland (+178.6% per year) and Latvia (+21.9% per year).

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Lithuania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, overseas purchases of plastic containers decreased by -15% to X tons for the first time since 2015, thus ending a five-year rising trend. Overall, total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 33%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2020, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, plastic container imports declined modestly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -8.3% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 29%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, Russia (X tons) constituted the largest plastic container supplier to Belarus, accounting for a 45% share of total imports. Moreover, plastic container imports from Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Poland (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Ukraine (X tons), with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Russia totaled +15.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (+4.8% per year) and Ukraine (+9.7% per year).

In value terms, Russia ($X), Poland ($X) and Ukraine ($X) were the largest plastic container suppliers to Belarus, with a combined 74% share of total imports. Italy, China, Lithuania, France and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 21%.

In terms of the main suppliers, France, with a CAGR of +61.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average plastic container import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 18% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a mild downturn. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Lithuania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
