Potato Market Size in Belarus

The Belarusian potato market stood at $X in 2021, rising by 11% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, recorded a mild decrease. Potato consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, potato exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports enjoyed a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 354%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Russia (X tons) was the main destination for potato exports from Belarus, accounting for a 98% share of total exports. It was followed by Ukraine (X tons), with a 1.2% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Russia amounted to +28.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Ukraine (+77.2% per year) and Moldova (-31.1% per year).

In value terms, Russia ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for potato exports from Belarus, comprising 95% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ukraine ($X), with a 1.8% share of total exports.

Imports into Belarus

For the third consecutive year, Belarus recorded growth in purchases abroad of potatoes, which increased by 65% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports saw a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 105% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In value terms, potato imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 163% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Ukraine (X tons), Russia (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main suppliers of potato imports to Belarus, with a combined 79% share of total imports.

Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for Lithuania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
