For the sixth year in a row, the Belarusian potato starch market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 9.6% to $X in 2021. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, potato starch exports rose rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a perceptible shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 53% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Russia (X tons) was the main destination for potato starch exports from Belarus, with a 77% share of total exports. Moreover, potato starch exports to Russia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Kazakhstan (X tons), tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Uzbekistan (X tons), with a 5.2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Russia stood at -3.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kazakhstan (+14.4% per year) and Uzbekistan (+16.2% per year).
In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the key foreign market for potato starch exports from Belarus, comprising 77% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with an 8% share of total exports. It was followed by Uzbekistan, with a 5.2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Russia amounted to -2.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kazakhstan (+14.2% per year) and Uzbekistan (+15.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average potato starch export price amounted to $X per ton, remaining constant against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the average export price increased by 39%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Kazakhstan ($X per ton) and Germany ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Ukraine ($X per ton) and China ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Russia (+1.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Belarus
In 2021, approx. X tons of potato starch were imported into Belarus; increasing by 66% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, imports recorded prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 67%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, potato starch imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a notable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 95%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Poland (X tons) constituted the largest potato starch supplier to Belarus, accounting for a 75% share of total imports. Moreover, potato starch imports from Poland exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Russia (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Germany (X tons), with a 6.9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Poland totaled +6.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Russia (+0.3% per year) and Germany (+58.4% per year).
In value terms, Poland ($X) constituted the largest supplier of potato starch to Belarus, comprising 72% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Russia ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with a 7.6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Poland totaled +5.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Russia (-1.6% per year) and Germany (+55.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average potato starch import price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 1.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a slight decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average import price increased by 17% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were Denmark ($X per ton) and Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Poland ($X per ton) and Russia ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
