Tomato Market Size in Belarus

The Belarusian tomato market reduced to $X in 2022, shrinking by -11.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, tomato exports stood at $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a slight decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 68%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Russia (X tons) was the main destination for tomato exports from Belarus, with a 96% share of total exports. Moreover, tomato exports to Russia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Ukraine (X tons), more than tenfold.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the key foreign market for tomatoes exports from Belarus, comprising 97% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ukraine ($X), with a 3.3% share of total exports.

Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Ukraine amounted to $X per ton.

Imports into Belarus

Tomato imports into Belarus shrank significantly to X tons in 2022, waning by -47.3% on the year before. Overall, imports saw a deep slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 55%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, tomato imports shrank significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a pronounced decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 92% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, Turkey (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of tomato to Belarus, accounting for a 34% share of total imports. Moreover, tomato imports from Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Poland (X tons), twofold. The Netherlands (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Turkey stood at -1.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (-13.0% per year) and the Netherlands (-3.7% per year).

In value terms, Turkey ($X) constituted the largest supplier of tomatoes to Belarus, comprising 34% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Poland ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Spain, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Turkey stood at +1.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (-9.5% per year) and Spain (-10.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average tomato import price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, tomato import price increased by +18.0% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 24% against the previous year. The import price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from Spain ($X per ton) and Turkey ($X per ton), while the price for Belgium ($X per ton) and the Netherlands ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ukraine (+12.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
