In 2022, the Belarusian non-alloy steel u-section market increased by 45% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a noticeable curtailment. Non-alloy steel u-section consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

The exports peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, non-alloy steel u-section exports declined slightly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 4,726%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then declined slightly in the following year.

Russia (X tons) was the main destination for non-alloy steel u-section exports from Belarus, with a 97% share of total exports. Moreover, non-alloy steel u-section exports to Russia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Kazakhstan (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Russia totaled +43.7%.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the key foreign market for u-sections of non-alloy steel exports from Belarus, comprising 92% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with an 8.2% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Russia totaled +56.9%.

The average non-alloy steel u-section export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 47% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price posted a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the average export price increased by 82% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Russia amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Estonia (+14.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, overseas purchases of u-sections of non-alloy steel were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, showed a pronounced setback. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, non-alloy steel u-section imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, Russia (X tons) constituted the largest non-alloy steel u-section supplier to Belarus, with a 66% share of total imports. Moreover, non-alloy steel u-section imports from Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Ukraine (X tons), twofold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Russia was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Ukraine (-8.7% per year) and Poland (+20.5% per year).

Over the period under review, import price indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, non-alloy steel u-section import price increased by +80.0% against 2020 indices.
