Urea Market Size in Belarus

After three years of growth, the Belarusian urea market decreased by -1.5% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a perceptible contraction. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Urea Production in Belarus

In value terms, urea production dropped to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 28%. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports from Belarus

In 2022, the amount of urea exported from Belarus dropped significantly to X tons, declining by -20.2% against 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 109% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, urea exports reduced rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 118%. The exports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Brazil (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Ukraine (X tons) were the main destinations of urea exports from Belarus, with a combined 59% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Ukraine (with a CAGR of +260.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Brazil ($X), Poland ($X) and Ukraine ($X) were the largest markets for urea exported from Belarus worldwide, with a combined 60% share of total exports.

Ukraine, with a CAGR of +257.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average urea export price amounted to $X per ton, declining by -8.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a mild curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 59%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Ukraine ($X per ton) and Brazil ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Lithuania ($X per ton) and the Netherlands ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Brazil (+1.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Urea Imports

Imports into Belarus

In 2022, the amount of urea imported into Belarus reduced sharply to X tons, which is down by -18.9% on the year before. Overall, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 89%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then dropped markedly in the following year.

In value terms, urea imports reduced remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a perceptible slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 163% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.

In 2022, Russia (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of urea to Belarus, with a 86% share of total imports. Moreover, urea imports from Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Poland (X tons), eightfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Russia was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (-1.0% per year) and Lithuania (+12.1% per year).

In value terms, Russia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of urea to Belarus, comprising 81% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Poland ($X), with a 14% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Russia stood at -4.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (+4.7% per year) and Lithuania (+19.6% per year).

The average urea import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -14.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a pronounced reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 41%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Lithuania ($X per ton), while the price for Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
