After two years of decline, the Belarusian market for spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages increased by 315% to $X in 2022. In general, consumption showed resilient growth. As a result, consumption attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Production of Spirits, Liqueurs And Other Spirituous Beverages in Belarus
In value terms, production of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages shrank slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, the total production indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +2.0% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the production volume increased by 37% against the previous year. Production of peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.
Exports of Spirits, Liqueurs And Other Spirituous Beverages
Exports from Belarus
After six years of growth, overseas shipments of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages decreased by -71.1% to X litres in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a noticeable downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 37%. Over the period under review, the exports of hit record highs at X litres in 2021, and then dropped remarkably in the following year.
In value terms, exports of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages shrank dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a perceptible decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 63% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Russia (X litres) was the main destination for exports of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages from Belarus, accounting for a 51% share of total exports. Moreover, exports of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages to Russia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Kazakhstan (X litres), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Lithuania (X litres), with an 8.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Russia totaled -3.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kazakhstan (+7.3% per year) and Lithuania (-11.8% per year).
In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the key foreign market for spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages exports from Belarus, comprising 43% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with an 8.7% share of total exports. It was followed by Latvia, with a 5.8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Russia amounted to -3.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kazakhstan (+6.6% per year) and Latvia (-6.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average export price for spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages stood at $X per litre in 2022, rising by 22% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.2%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 23% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per litre. From 2015 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ukraine ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to Estonia ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Ukraine (+1.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Spirits, Liqueurs And Other Spirituous Beverages
Imports into Belarus
In 2022, supplies from abroad of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages was finally on the rise to reach X litres for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, imports posted a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 180% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports of attained the maximum at X litres in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, imports of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports posted a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 124%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports of remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Ukraine (X litres) constituted the largest spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages supplier to Belarus, accounting for a 39% share of total imports. Moreover, imports of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages from Ukraine exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X litres), fourfold. Lithuania (X litres) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 7.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Ukraine amounted to +9.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+21.6% per year) and Lithuania (-18.8% per year).
In value terms, Germany ($X), Finland ($X) and Ukraine ($X) were the largest spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages suppliers to Belarus, with a combined 42% share of total imports. Mexico, Italy, France, Ireland, the Czech Republic, Lithuania, Russia, Sweden and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 42%.
Among the main suppliers, the Czech Republic, with a CAGR of +25.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average import price for spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages stood at $X per litre in 2022, surging by 35% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($X per litre), while the price for Ukraine ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Lithuania (+15.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
