Whey Market Size in Belarus
In 2022, the Belarusian whey market increased by 26% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Whey consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Exports from Belarus
In 2022, overseas shipments of whey decreased by -10% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, total exports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 72%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.
In value terms, whey exports stood at $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a moderate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 43%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
China (X tons), Russia (X tons) and the Philippines (X tons) were the main destinations of whey exports from Belarus, together comprising 80% of total exports. Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 14%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Thailand (with a CAGR of +133.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for whey exported from Belarus were China ($X), Russia ($X) and the Philippines ($X), with a combined 77% share of total exports. Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 17%.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Malaysia, with a CAGR of +129.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average whey export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a mild decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 44% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Indonesia (+19.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Whey Imports
Imports into Belarus
In 2022, supplies from abroad of whey decreased by -29.7% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 564%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, whey imports reduced dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 785%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Russia (X tons) was the main supplier of whey to Belarus, accounting for a approx. 100% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Russia stood at +6.0%.
In value terms, Russia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of whey to Belarus.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Russia stood at +5.7%.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average whey import price amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -7.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a mild shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 87% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for Russia.
