The Belarusian flax fabric market soared to $X in 2022, surging by 57% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a pronounced decrease. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then contracted significantly in the following year.

In value terms, flax fabric exports rose markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 62%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

Lithuania (X tons) was the main destination for flax fabric exports from Belarus, with a 28% share of total exports. Moreover, flax fabric exports to Lithuania exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Netherlands (X tons), twofold. Turkey (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 13% share.

From 2020 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Lithuania stood at +17.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (+106.5% per year) and Turkey (+112.8% per year).

In value terms, Lithuania ($X), Turkey ($X) and Estonia ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for flax fabric exported from Belarus worldwide, together accounting for 52% of total exports.

Turkey, with a CAGR of +101.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average flax fabric export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 53% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible slump. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ukraine ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2020 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Russia (+24.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2022, the amount of woven fabrics of flax imported into Belarus reached X tons, surging by 2.6% on 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a perceptible shrinkage. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, flax fabric imports expanded markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a mild expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 55% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
