Yoghurt Market Size in Belarus

In 2022, the Belarusian yoghurt market increased by 16% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, consumption, however, showed a perceptible downturn. Yoghurt consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Belarus

In 2022, after ten years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of yoghurt, when their volume decreased by -10.6% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 90%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, yoghurt exports declined to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 107%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

Russia (X tons) was the main destination for yoghurt exports from Belarus, accounting for a 89% share of total exports. Moreover, yoghurt exports to Russia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Ukraine (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Russia amounted to +25.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Ukraine (+14.4% per year) and Azerbaijan (+45.2% per year).

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the key foreign market for yoghurt exports from Belarus, comprising 91% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ukraine ($X), with a 4.4% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Russia stood at +27.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Ukraine (+12.3% per year) and Azerbaijan (+35.4% per year).

The average yoghurt export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, flattening at the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, yoghurt export price decreased by -1.4% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the average export price increased by 36% against the previous year. There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Azerbaijan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Russia (+1.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

In 2022, approx. X tons of yoghurt were imported into Belarus; almost unchanged from 2021 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 36%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 36% against the previous year. In 2022, Russia (X tons) was the main yoghurt supplier to Belarus, accounting for a 98% share of total imports. It was followed by Ireland (X tons), with a 1.6% share of total imports.
