Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

The Netherlands (X tons) was the main destination for barley exports from Belgium, with a 71% share of total exports. Moreover, barley exports to the Netherlands exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, France (X tons), threefold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to the Netherlands totaled -9.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: France (-7.3% per year) and Germany (-27.6% per year).

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to the Netherlands stood at -8.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: France (-12.2% per year) and Germany (-27.8% per year).

The average barley export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to France ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into Belgium
For the third year in a row, Belgium recorded decline in supplies from abroad of barley, which decreased by -2.4% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 15%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, barley imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +90.1% against 2015 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2022, France (X tons) constituted the largest barley supplier to Belgium, accounting for a 76% share of total imports. Moreover, barley imports from France exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the UK (X tons), tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Germany (X tons), with a 4.5% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from France totaled +1.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the UK (+19.3% per year) and Germany (-5.3% per year).
In value terms, France ($X) constituted the largest supplier of barley to Belgium, comprising 75% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the UK ($X), with an 8.6% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with a 4.3% share.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from Sweden ($X per ton) and Denmark ($X per ton), while the price for Germany ($X per ton) and the Netherlands ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sweden (+2.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
