In 2021, purchases abroad of carbonates and peroxocarbonates increased by 42% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +85.3% against 2018 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, carbonate imports expanded markedly to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 29% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Germany (X tons), France (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) were the main suppliers of carbonate imports to Belgium, together comprising 84% of total imports.
