Crude Granite Market Size in Belgium

The Belgian crude granite market fell significantly to $X in 2022, shrinking by -16.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed moderate growth. Crude granite consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, shipments abroad of granite (crude) increased by 53% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after six years of decline. Overall, exports, however, showed a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 3,192%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, crude granite exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a pronounced contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 4,797%. The exports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

France (X tons) was the main destination for crude granite exports from Belgium, accounting for a 58% share of total exports. Moreover, crude granite exports to France exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United States (X tons), twofold. The Netherlands (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 7.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to France totaled +4.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (+92.2% per year) and the Netherlands (+72.0% per year).

In value terms, France ($X) remains the key foreign market for granite (crude) exports from Belgium, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United States ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 5.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to France stood at +6.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (+85.4% per year) and the Netherlands (+61.7% per year).

In 2022, the average crude granite export price amounted to $X per ton, waning by -2.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 49% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+4.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Belgium

After three years of growth, supplies from abroad of granite (crude) decreased by -46.5% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports recorded a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 169% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then fell remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, crude granite imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a pronounced decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 109%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa (X tons), France (X tons) and India (X tons) were the main suppliers of crude granite imports to Belgium, together comprising 69% of total imports. Portugal, the UK, Brazil and Mozambique lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 27%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by the UK (with a CAGR of +83.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constituted the largest supplier of granite (crude) to Belgium, comprising 40% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from South Africa stood at -3.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (-7.3% per year) and France (+14.5% per year).

In 2022, the average crude granite import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 117% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while the price for Portugal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
