From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Spain (with a CAGR of +75.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), Algeria ($X) and Spain ($X) constituted the largest markets for iron ore exported from Belgium worldwide, with a combined 91% share of total exports.
Algeria, with a CAGR of +284.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Algeria (+11.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, purchases abroad of iron ores and concentrates decreased by -0.6% to X tons, falling for the fourth year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 15% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, iron ore imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a temperate increase. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Brazil (X tons), Canada (X tons) and Sweden (X tons) were the main suppliers of iron ore imports to Belgium, together comprising 88% of total imports. These countries were followed by Liberia, the United States and Ukraine, which together accounted for a further 8.8%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Liberia (with a CAGR of +53.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest iron ore suppliers to Belgium were Brazil ($X), Canada ($X) and Sweden ($X), together comprising 88% of total imports. The United States, Ukraine and Liberia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 6.9%.

The average iron ore import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 77% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate notable growth. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the price for Liberia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ukraine (+49.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
