Sodium Phosphates Market Size in Belgium
The Belgian sodium phosphates market contracted dramatically to $X in 2021, which is down by -37.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, sodium phosphates exports fell to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 100% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then reduced modestly in the following year.
Exports by Country
The Netherlands (X tons) was the main destination for sodium phosphates exports from Belgium, accounting for a 38% share of total exports. Moreover, sodium phosphates exports to the Netherlands exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (X tons), twofold. France (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 17% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to the Netherlands stood at -3.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+0.0% per year) and France (+7.8% per year).
In value terms, the largest markets for sodium phosphates exported from Belgium were France ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Germany ($X), with a combined 48% share of total exports. These countries were followed by the UK, Denmark, Saudi Arabia and Spain, which together accounted for a further 26%.
Saudi Arabia, with a CAGR of +75.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average sodium phosphates export price amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -18.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average export price increased by 107%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then declined markedly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Denmark ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+10.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Belgium
In 2021, imports of phosphates of mono- or di-sodium into Belgium reduced markedly to X tons, falling by -27% against the year before. In general, imports, however, showed a moderate increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 61% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then dropped sharply in the following year.
In value terms, sodium phosphates imports fell dramatically to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, posted strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 70%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then declined dramatically in the following year.
Imports by Country
Germany (X tons), France (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) were the main suppliers of sodium phosphates imports to Belgium, with a combined 80% share of total imports. These countries were followed by the United States, the Netherlands, Slovenia and India, which together accounted for a further 17%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Slovenia (with a CAGR of +491.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($X) constituted the largest supplier of phosphates of mono- or di-sodium to Belgium, comprising 53% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United States ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with an 8.1% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Germany amounted to +12.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (+28.7% per year) and France (-10.0% per year).

In 2021, the average sodium phosphates import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 6.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, sodium phosphates import price increased by +17.2% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 45% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while the price for Slovenia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+4.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
