In value terms, exports of salted, dried or smoked meat, and offal contracted rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a pronounced decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 16%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports of failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

France (X tons) was the main destination for exports of salted, dried or smoked meat, and offal from Belgium, accounting for a 47% share of total exports. Moreover, exports of salted, dried or smoked meat, and offal to France exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Netherlands (X tons), threefold. Germany (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to France was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (-10.2% per year) and Germany (+0.7% per year).

Luxembourg, the UK, Sweden and Senegal lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 14%.

Senegal, with a CAGR of +107.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average export price for salted, dried or smoked meat, and offal stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 1.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the average export price increased by 20%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Luxembourg ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Senegal (+6.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Belgium

In 2022, purchases abroad of salted, dried or smoked meat, and offal decreased by -38.7% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year rising trend. In general, total imports indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 21% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then contracted markedly in the following year.

In value terms, imports of salted, dried or smoked meat, and offal reduced to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 18%. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the Netherlands (X tons) constituted the largest salted, dried or smoked meat, and offal supplier to Belgium, with a 41% share of total imports. Moreover, imports of salted, dried or smoked meat, and offal from the Netherlands exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Germany (X tons), with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the Netherlands totaled +11.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+2.4% per year) and Germany (-2.8% per year).

In value terms, the largest salted, dried or smoked meat, and offal suppliers to Belgium were Italy ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Germany ($X), together comprising 71% of total imports. France, Spain, Poland, Brazil and Thailand lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 28%.

Poland, with a CAGR of +101.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average import price for salted, dried or smoked meat, and offal stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a slight reduction. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+3.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
