Shelled Hazelnut Market Size in Belgium

In 2021, the Belgian shelled hazelnut market increased by 0.4% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after five years of decline. Overall, consumption showed a deep setback. Shelled hazelnut consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, shelled hazelnut production shrank markedly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production recorded a deep downturn. In value terms, shelled hazelnut exports fell dramatically to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, posted a mild increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 203%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.

Germany (X tons), the UK (X tons) and France (X tons) were the main destinations of shelled hazelnut exports from Belgium, together comprising 86% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for the UK (with a CAGR of +55.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X), France ($X) and the UK ($X) were the largest markets for shelled hazelnut exported from Belgium worldwide, together accounting for 84% of total exports.

Among the main countries of destination, the UK, with a CAGR of +52.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average shelled hazelnut export price amounted to $X per ton, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 31% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Portugal ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the UK ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Portugal (+5.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Belgium

In 2021, the amount of shelled hazelnuts imported into Belgium reduced modestly to X tons, declining by -2.8% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 36%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, shelled hazelnut imports amounted to $X in 2021. In general, imports saw a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 67% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Germany (X tons), Turkey (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the main suppliers of shelled hazelnut imports to Belgium, together comprising 83% of total imports. These countries were followed by Italy, France, Luxembourg, Georgia and the UK, which together accounted for a further 16%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Luxembourg (with a CAGR of +115.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, Germany ($X) constituted the largest supplier of shelled hazelnuts to Belgium, comprising 45% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Turkey ($X), with a 22% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 16% share.

Based on 2021 figures, shelled hazelnut import price increased by +26.9% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 46%.
