In 2022, after five years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of sparkling wine, when their volume decreased by -39.4% to X litres. Overall, exports, however, posted prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 255%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X litres, and then shrank dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, sparkling wine exports reduced markedly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, posted a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 285% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then declined significantly in the following year.

Exports by Country

The UK (X litres) was the main destination for sparkling wine exports from Belgium, accounting for a 68% share of total exports. Moreover, sparkling wine exports to the UK exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Luxembourg (X litres), sevenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by the Netherlands (X litres), with a 7.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to the UK totaled +79.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Luxembourg (+5.8% per year) and the Netherlands (+2.5% per year).

In value terms, the UK ($X) remains the key foreign market for sparkling wine exports from Belgium, comprising 57% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Luxembourg ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 7.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the UK amounted to +64.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Luxembourg (+8.7% per year) and the Netherlands (-1.5% per year).

In 2022, approx. X litres of sparkling wine were imported into Belgium; waning by -37.6% against the previous year's figure. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 67% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X litres, and then fell remarkably in the following year.

Spain (X litres), France (X litres) and Italy (X litres) were the main suppliers of sparkling wine imports to Belgium, with a combined 92% share of total imports. The Netherlands, Germany, Luxembourg and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 7.8%.
