Spinach Market Size in Belgium

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was decline in the Belgian spinach market, when its value decreased by -2.6% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a resilient increase. Spinach consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

Spinach Production in Belgium

In value terms, spinach production declined to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the production volume increased by 68% against the previous year. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 148%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, spinach exports reduced rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a perceptible setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 222% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The Netherlands (X tons) was the main destination for spinach exports from Belgium, accounting for a 62% share of total exports. Moreover, spinach exports to the Netherlands exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, France (X tons), twofold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to the Netherlands amounted to -17.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: France (+0.4% per year) and Luxembourg (+3.9% per year).

Over the period under review, the export price, however, enjoyed a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average export price increased by 65% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Luxembourg ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to France ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, approx. X tons of spinach were imported into Belgium; jumping by 64% against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed pronounced growth. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, spinach imports fell rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, total imports indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -31.9% against 2020 indices.
