The Netherlands (X tons) was the main destination for tea exports from Belgium, accounting for a 33% share of total exports. Moreover, tea exports to the Netherlands exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, France (X tons), twofold. Germany (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the Netherlands totaled +7.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: France (-6.1% per year) and Germany (-10.4% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for tea exported from Belgium were the Netherlands ($X), France ($X) and Spain ($X), together accounting for 64% of total exports. Luxembourg, Germany, Italy and Mali lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 19%.

Mali, with a CAGR of +107.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of tea, when their volume decreased by -12.5% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports showed a mild reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 87% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, tea imports shrank slightly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a measured increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 61%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

China (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Poland (X tons) were the main suppliers of tea imports to Belgium, with a combined 44% share of total imports. India, Germany, France, Malawi, Turkey, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, the UK and Indonesia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 45%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for France (with a CAGR of +16.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
