In value terms, exports of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages contracted sharply to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 127%. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced sharply in the following year.

Nigeria (X litres), the UK (X litres) and the Netherlands (X litres) were the main destinations of exports of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages from Belgium, with a combined 53% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Nigeria (with a CAGR of +94.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Luxembourg ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and the UK ($X) constituted the largest markets for spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages exported from Belgium worldwide, with a combined 63% share of total exports. The export price peaked at $X per litre in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Luxembourg ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to Australia ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into Belgium

In 2022, overseas purchases of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages decreased by -8.1% to X litres for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 115% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports of reached the peak figure at X litres in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, imports of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages contracted to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 32%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, leveling off in the following year.

Imports by Country

France (X litres), Italy (X litres) and Germany (X litres) were the main suppliers of imports of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages to Belgium, with a combined 75% share of total imports. The Netherlands, Sweden, Luxembourg and Mexico lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 20%.

Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average import price increased by 50% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per litre. From 2014 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Luxembourg ($X per litre), while the price for Italy ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
