Whisky Market Size in Belgium
The Belgian whisky market reduced markedly to $X in 2022, dropping by -60.8% against the previous year. In general, consumption saw a abrupt contraction. Whisky consumption peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, whisky production shrank notably to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, enjoyed strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 46%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X, and then fell notably in the following year.

In 2022, shipments abroad of whisky decreased by -18.5% to X litres for the first time since 2011, thus ending a ten-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 43%. The exports peaked at X litres in 2021, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.
In value terms, whisky exports reduced dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 49% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank markedly in the following year.
Exports by Country
The Netherlands (X litres), Luxembourg (X litres) and Italy (X litres) were the main destinations of whisky exports from Belgium, with a combined 70% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Italy (with a CAGR of +60.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), Luxembourg ($X) and Germany ($X) were the largest markets for whisky exported from Belgium worldwide, with a combined 73% share of total exports. These countries were followed by France, Italy, Spain and Ukraine, which together accounted for a further 12%.
Among the main countries of destination, Italy, with a CAGR of +34.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average whisky export price stood at $X per litre in 2022, waning by -5.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a pronounced decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average export price increased by 16%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per litre in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to Italy ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+2.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Belgium
In 2022, purchases abroad of whisky decreased by -29.2% to X litres, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 51% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X litres in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, whisky imports reduced slightly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Germany (X litres), the UK (X litres) and France (X litres) were the main suppliers of whisky imports to Belgium, with a combined 59% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Luxembourg, Ireland, the Netherlands, the United States and Italy, which together accounted for a further 35%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Ireland (with a CAGR of +27.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the UK ($X), France ($X) and Luxembourg ($X) were the largest whisky suppliers to Belgium, with a combined 56% share of total imports. Germany, the Netherlands, Ireland, the United States and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 38%.
In terms of the main suppliers, Ireland, with a CAGR of +22.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
