From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

France (X square meters), Germany (X square meters) and Bulgaria (X square meters) were the main destinations of silk fabric exports from Belgium, together comprising 45% of total exports. Italy, Portugal, Hungary, the United States, Poland, North Macedonia, the Netherlands, Hong Kong SAR, Switzerland and India lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 39%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Hungary (with a CAGR of +54.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average silk fabric export price stood at $X per square meter in 2021, falling by -5.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a mild decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 9.7% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per square meter in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per square meter), while the average price for exports to North Macedonia ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Poland (+8.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Belgium
For the third year in a row, Belgium recorded decline in supplies from abroad of woven fabrics of silk or of silk waste, which decreased by -18.3% to X square meters in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 13%. Imports peaked at X square meters in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, silk fabric imports reduced slightly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports saw a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, India (X square meters) constituted the largest silk fabric supplier to Belgium, with a 49% share of total imports. Moreover, silk fabric imports from India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X square meters), twofold. Italy (X square meters) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from India amounted to -5.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-9.2% per year) and Italy (-19.8% per year).
In value terms, India ($X), Italy ($X) and China ($X) were the largest silk fabric suppliers to Belgium, with a combined 83% share of total imports. These countries were followed by France, the UK, the Netherlands and Turkey, which together accounted for a further 14%.
Turkey, with a CAGR of +5.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.

The average silk fabric import price stood at $X per square meter in 2021, picking up by 17% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a slight decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average import price increased by 39%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per square meter in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
