After four years of growth, the Benelux market for anise, badian, fennel and coriander decreased by -4.8% to $X in 2022. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a strong increase. Total exports indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +50.5% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 45%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.

The Netherlands was the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which amounted to 86% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Belgium (X tons), comprising a 14% share of total exports.

Exports from the Netherlands decreased at an average annual rate of -1.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Belgium (+3.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belgium emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Benelux, with a CAGR of +3.6% from 2012-2022. While the share of Belgium (+5.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of the Netherlands (-5.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) remains the largest anise, badian, fennel and coriander supplier in Benelux, comprising 86% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belgium ($X), with a 14% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the Netherlands stood at +2.7%.

In 2022, the export price in Benelux amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 3.7% against the previous year. Export price indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last decade. Total imports indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 45%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then shrank notably in the following year.

In value terms, anise, badian, fennel and coriander imports declined to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, posted a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 51% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

The Netherlands was the major importer of anise, badian, fennel and coriander in Benelux, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was approx. 85% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Belgium (X tons), committing a 15% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in the Netherlands stood at +5.8%.

Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while the Netherlands amounted to $X per ton.
