Bottled Water Market Size in Benelux

The Benelux bottled water market soared to $X in 2022, increasing by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a pronounced reduction. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, bottled water production contracted modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production saw a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 19%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, after five years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of bottled waters, when their volume decreased by -12.5% to X tons. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a notable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 68%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, bottled water exports expanded slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a noticeable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 48% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Belgium (X tons) represented the main exporter of bottled waters, comprising 74% of total exports. It was distantly followed by the Netherlands (X tons) and Luxembourg (X tons), together committing a 26% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to bottled water exports from Belgium stood at +3.2%. At the same time, the Netherlands (+7.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Netherlands emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Benelux, with a CAGR of +7.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Luxembourg (-1.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of the Netherlands increased by +6.1 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Belgium ($X) remains the largest bottled water supplier in Benelux, comprising 67% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Netherlands ($X), with a 27% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Belgium totaled +2.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Netherlands (+10.9% per year) and Luxembourg (-0.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Benelux amounted to $X per ton, growing by 19% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 64% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Luxembourg ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+2.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Benelux

In 2022, the amount of bottled waters imported in Benelux skyrocketed to X tons, growing by 18% against 2021 figures. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced downturn. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, bottled water imports totaled $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 21% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the Netherlands (X tons) represented the major importer of bottled waters, generating 75% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Belgium (X tons), constituting a 20% share of total imports. Luxembourg (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

Imports into the Netherlands decreased at an average annual rate of -1.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Luxembourg (+11.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Luxembourg emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Benelux, with a CAGR of +11.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Belgium (-10.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of the Netherlands and Luxembourg increased by +17 and +3.4 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Belgium ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Luxembourg ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 99.9% share of total imports.

The Netherlands, with a CAGR of +5.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Benelux stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -14.7% against the previous year. Import price indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, bottled water import price increased by +42.6% against 2014 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 39% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
