In 2022, the Netherlands (X tons) represented the main exporter of carbon dioxide, achieving 70% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Belgium (X tons), committing a 30% share of total exports.

Exports from the Netherlands decreased at an average annual rate of -2.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Belgium (+5.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belgium emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Benelux, with a CAGR of +5.0% from 2012-2022. While the share of Belgium (+13 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of the Netherlands (-13.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) remains the largest carbon dioxide supplier in Benelux, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belgium ($X), with a 19% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the Netherlands stood at +10.3%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Benelux stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 60% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded resilient growth. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Belgium amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+13.3%).

Imports in Benelux

In 2022, supplies from abroad of carbon dioxide increased by 14% to X tons, rising for the fourth consecutive year after five years of decline. Over the period under review, imports recorded strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 173% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In value terms, carbon dioxide imports soared to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +18.5% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 30%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

The Netherlands prevails in imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 94% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Belgium (X tons), comprising a 5.2% share of total imports.

The Netherlands was also the fastest-growing in terms of the carbon dioxide imports, with a CAGR of +8.4% from 2012 to 2022. Belgium experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of the Netherlands (+5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Belgium (-5.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the largest carbon dioxide importing markets in Benelux were the Netherlands ($X) and Belgium ($X).

The Netherlands, with a CAGR of +8.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Benelux stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 1.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a mild contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 64%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
