The Benelux market for caviar (salmon) and caviar substitutes was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. For the third year in a row, Benelux recorded growth in shipments abroad of caviar (salmon) and caviar substitutes, which increased by 32% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports enjoyed a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 176%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, caviar (salmon) and caviar substitutes exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports posted significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 126%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

The Netherlands prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 93% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Belgium (X tons), generating a 5.9% share of total exports. Luxembourg (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

The Netherlands was also the fastest-growing in terms of the caviar (salmon) and caviar substitutes exports, with a CAGR of +37.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Luxembourg (+18.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Belgium (-4.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The Netherlands (+57 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Belgium saw its share reduced by -55.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) remains the largest caviar (salmon) and caviar substitutes supplier in Benelux, comprising 87% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belgium ($X), with an 8.7% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the Netherlands amounted to +44.3%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belgium (-3.8% per year) and Luxembourg (+17.3% per year).

In 2021, the export price in Benelux amounted to $X per ton, flattening at the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a mild downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 24% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Luxembourg ($X per ton), while the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

For the fifth consecutive year, Benelux recorded growth in overseas purchases of caviar (salmon) and caviar substitutes, which increased by 10% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 226%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In value terms, caviar (salmon) and caviar substitutes imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 202% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

In 2021, the Netherlands (X tons) was the main importer of caviar (salmon) and caviar substitutes, generating 86% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Belgium (X tons), mixing up a 13% share of total imports.

The Netherlands was also the fastest-growing in terms of the caviar (salmon) and caviar substitutes imports, with a CAGR of +46.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Belgium (+1.8%) displayed positive paces of growth.
