The Benelux cherry market contracted markedly to $X in 2022, shrinking by -49.1% against the previous year. Overall, consumption saw a mild descent. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then reduced notably in the following year.

Cherry Production in Benelux

In value terms, cherry production shrank to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the production volume increased by 98%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were the Netherlands (X tons) and Belgium (X tons).

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 26%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cherry exports shrank to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 26%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped slightly in the following year.

The shipments of the two major exporters of cherries, namely Belgium and the Netherlands, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Belgium (with a CAGR of +4.5%).

In value terms, the largest cherry supplying countries in Benelux were Belgium ($X) and the Netherlands ($X).

In 2022, the export price in Benelux amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -13.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the export price increased by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while the Netherlands amounted to $X per ton.

Imports in Benelux

In 2022, imports of cherries in Benelux reduced markedly to X tons, which is down by -32.6% compared with the year before. Overall, imports continue to indicate a perceptible slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 47%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cherry imports shrank sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a pronounced setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 38%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then declined remarkably in the following year.

The Netherlands represented the main importer of cherries in Benelux, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 67% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Belgium (X tons), making up a 29% share of total imports. Luxembourg (X tons) held a little share of total imports.
