Belgium was also the fastest-growing in terms of the citric acid and its salts and esters exports, with a CAGR of +24.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, the Netherlands (+11.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Belgium increased by +22 percentage points.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Belgium totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+1.9%).

Imports in Benelux

In 2021, after three years of growth, there was decline in purchases abroad of citric acid and its salts and esters, when their volume decreased by -4% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, recorded resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 38%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then reduced modestly in the following year.

In value terms, citric acid imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +137.1% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 29% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

The Netherlands was the main importer of citric acid and its salts and esters in Benelux, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was approx. 60% of total imports in 2021. Belgium (X tons) took a 32% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Luxembourg (7.2%).
