Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In 2022, the Netherlands (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) represented the main exporter of densified wood in Benelux, creating 99.9% of total export.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +8.1%).

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) remains the largest densified wood supplier in Benelux, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belgium ($X), with a 24% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the Netherlands stood at +10.7%.

The export price in Benelux stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a mild decline. In 2022, overseas purchases of densified wood decreased by -20.7% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after four years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a tangible expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 75% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, densified wood imports declined to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +86.7% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 32%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then fell in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the Netherlands (X tons) represented the largest importer of densified wood, making up 88% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Belgium (X tons), generating a 12% share of total imports.

The Netherlands was also the fastest-growing in terms of the densified wood imports, with a CAGR of +4.0% from 2012 to 2022. Belgium (-1.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The Netherlands (+7.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Belgium saw its share reduced by -6.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
