In 2022, shipments abroad of fish heads, tails and maws decreased by -85.7% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year rising trend. Overall, exports saw a mild reduction. The Netherlands was the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which reached 88% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Belgium (X tons), mixing up a 12% share of total exports.
The Netherlands was also the fastest-growing in terms of the fish heads, tails and maws exports, with a CAGR of -1.3% from 2012 to 2022. Belgium (-4.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The Netherlands (+4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Belgium saw its share reduced by -3.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) and Belgium ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022.

Export price indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 36%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while the Netherlands totaled $X per ton.

Imports in Benelux
After three years of growth, supplies from abroad of fish heads, tails and maws decreased by -83.5% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports faced a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 180%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.
In value terms, fish parts imports declined significantly to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 40% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, Belgium (X tons) was the key importer of fish heads, tails and maws, making up 74% of total imports. It was distantly followed by the Netherlands (X tons), making up a 24% share of total imports.
Belgium was also the fastest-growing in terms of the fish heads, tails and maws imports, with a CAGR of -7.8% from 2012 to 2022. The Netherlands (-15.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Belgium increased by +22 percentage points.
